RINJANI MOUNTAIN

A WORTHY DESTINATION

GENERAL INFORMATION

Mount Rinjani or Gunung Rinjani is an active volcano in Indonesia on North Lombok, NTB. It rises to 3,726 metres, making it the second highest volcano in Indonesia. On the top of the volcano there is a 1.100 hectare wide caldera with crescent-shaped, which is filled partially by the crater lake known as Segara Anak or Anak Laut (Child of the Sea) due to its blue color like the sea. This lake is approximately 2,010 metres above sea level and estimated to be about 200 metres deep, the caldera also contains hot springs. In the middle of the lake, stands an active volcano called the Baru Jari mountain. In Segara Anak there are many fishes, so it’s often used for fishing. The southern part of the lake is called Segara Endut.

The volcano and the caldera are protected by the Gunung Rinjani National Park established in 1997. In 2008, the Indonesian government proposed to UNESCO that Mount Rinjani be one of the world’s official geoparks. If this was approved by UNESCO, Mount Rinjani would become the first such geological park in Indonesia.

Sasak tribe and Hindu people assume the lake and the mount are sacred and some religious activities are occasionally done in the two areas. On 31 October 2015, Mount Baru Jari started erupting again.

BEST TIME TO VISIT

Best time to hike Rinjani is between May until September, because on December until March is rainy season in Indonesia with the frequent storms and landslides. National park are also closed during some of these times for natural rehabilitation. Every year (June-August) there are many hikers come to Rinjani.

TRACK AND DESTINATIONS

Most climbers begin the ascent from Sembalun route and put an end to Senaru route, it can save 700 meters altitude. Sembalun route rather long but flat, and the weather is hotter because through the blistering savanna (cold temperatures but direct solar radiation burning the skin). If you begin from Senaru, you will through an ascent along your way. But with cold weather because through the forest.

From these two locations takes about 7 hours walking to the lip of the ridge at an altitude 2.641 meters above sea level (arriving in Plawangan Senaru or Plawangan Sembalun). In this place, you can view towards the lake. From Plawangan Senaru (if rising from Senaru) down to the lake via a steep wall to a height of 2.000 meters above sea level, taken within 2 hours. We can camp on the lake. Local people have a tradition of visiting Segara Anak for fishing or soak in the hotspring tubs.

To go for summit, you have to camp in Plawangan Sembalun. Summit attack starts at 1:00 am for sunrise at the top of Rinjani. The journey to the summit is quite tough.. The track is soft sand, stone and soil. The last 200 meters altitude will be the toughest, as one step forward followed by a half step down because of the soft sand. To climb Rinjani you don’t need special gears, you just need good stamina, patience and passion to reach the top.

Rinjani can be achieved in three days and two nights program, or more if you want to enjoy every moments in Rinjani.

TEMPERATURE

The average air temperature of about 20 ° C; lows 12 ° C. Strong winds in the usual peak occurred in August.

CONDITION

There’s no toilet and food stalls in Rinjani. We make our own food with camping gears and have dinner under 500 billions stars. It will be very romantic!
