MOUNT ARJUNO

General Information of Mount Arjuno

Standing at 3,339 meters, Mount Arjuno is the third highest mountain in Java and part of the Arjuno- Welirang volcanic complex. The mountainous range spreads between Malang, Batu, and Pasuruan region. The name comes from Arjuna, a hero in the Mahabharata story, a foundational Hindu epic. The mountain is famous for its lush forest trails, expansive savanna, and panoramic views from the summit. Along the routes, hikers may find ancient Hindu temple ruins, meditation sites, and diverse flora and fauna, including edelweiss and wild orchids. From the summit, climbers can enjoy breathtaking views of Semeru, Penanggungan, and other surrounding peaks.

Best Time to Climb Mount Arjuno

Can be climbed year-round, but the best time is April-October during the dry season. Morning climbs are recommended to enjoy clear views. Trails can be slippery and foggy during the rainy season

Arjuno Trekking

Popular trekking routes to Mount Arjuno start from Tretes, Lawang, Batu, and kebun teh (Tea Plantation). Each route offers a different trekking experience and duration.

  • Via Batu (Sumberbrantas): Starting from Batu, it takes roughly 3 hours to reach Pos 1, then 2 hours to Pos 2, another 2 hours to Pos 3, and 2 more hours to the Summit, giving an average of 9 hours in total.
  • Via Tretes (Tompul): known for its quieter trails, this route requires about 2.5 hours ro reach Pos 1 continue with 1.5 hours to Pos 2, and 2 hours to Pos 3 (Lembah Kijang). From campsite in Lembah Kijang to and 2 more hours to the Summit, totaling around 8 hours. This trek path covered with stone and can be challenging.
  • Via kebun teh (Tea Plantation): starting through tea plantations, this route takes about 2 hours to Pos 1 continue with 1.5 hours to Pos 2, another 2 hours to Pos 3, and 2 hours to the Summit, with a total hiking time of around 7 hours.

 

Temperature, Culinary, and Facillities

Temperatures can drop to 5C at night. No food stalls on the trail, only at base camp. There is nor toilet in the campground, last toilet building is in the basecamp before the trekking begins. Water sources on the trails are limited and seasonal. There are no huts or shelters at the summit. Camp in tents is the only option for overnight stays.
