COBAN SEWU & GOA TETES WATERFALL

AN ADVENTURE TO THE HIDDEN WATERFALLS

GENERAL INFORMATION OF TUMPAK SEWU

Tumpak Sewu or Coban Sewu Waterfall is a rising star destination located in the Pronojiwo, Lumajang. This waterfall was not a tourist destination and only known to locals until several years ago.
Tumpak/ Coban means waterfall and Sewu means one thousand. A thousand waterfall because from one cliff there are a lot of waterfall flowing down and looks like “a thousand” waterfall.
All but one waterfall is spring water from the Semeru mountain, so the water is always clear and clean. Only one waterfall is from the river above and can go brown on rainy season.

If you walk through the river stream, you will also find another waterfall named Goa Tetes. This waterfall is formed like steps with many small waterfall and ponds. The upper part of this waterfall formed a cave and creates a natural stalagtite. Goa Tetes has gained popularity long before Coban Sewu found, therefore the track is easier to reach than Coban Sewu.
Both of the waterfall is maintained by local people. They maintain this new destination very well by preserving its cleanliness and being very friendly with every coming traveler.

 

BEST TIME TO VISIT TUMPAK SEWU

Tumpak Sewu Waterfall can be visited whole year. It does not run dries in the dry season. In rainy season, the water from the river can be harsher. In some occasion when the rain falls hard, it may get flooded and closed for tourist. But the local guardian will warn you if its not safe to visit, so be worry-free.
Rains mostly falls in the afternoon, so come earlier in the morning.
If you are into photographs, its also best to get the picture in the morning. In midday, the sunlight and the mist from the waterfall will make the picture look misty and foggy. When you are lucky, you can see rainbows in the waterfalls.

 

TRACK AND DESTINATIONS IN TUMPAK SEWU

At first, we will see the waterfall from above. Then we’ll start trekking down the valley through some wooden stairs and soil tracks. At some point we have to climb down a small waterfall with the help of a rope. Once you arrive at the bottom of the valley, we only need to follow the trek and be under the waterfall. The whole area is always raining from the waterfall splash. You can take cool pictures in some rocks, but please always be carefull as it may get slippery.
From Tumpak Sewu, we willl follow the river stream to Goa Tetes Waterfall. Along the way you will find many smaller waterfalls. Once we reach Goa Tetes, you can find a freshwater pool where you can soak in and enjoy the natural pool. Then we will start trekking back up through Goa Tetes Waterfall. You will have to climb up a random-natural steps through various ponds. After passing Goa Tetes, the way back is easier with cement-made stairs.

The area is hot and humid but the water is cool enough to refresh you.

 

CULINARY AROUND TUMPAK SEWU

There are just few small stalls near the parking area. So have your breakfast and pack some snacks and mineral water. You can also ask your guide to pack lunch from Malang City and we can have some lunch picnic on the waterfall.

Prepare extra clothes or raincoat, you’ll get wet!
Towel for after the trip (leave it in the car)
Use a comfortable and non slippery tracking-shoes/sandal. The track is slippery, and you will walk through rivers
Waterproof protection for your gadgets
Mineral water and snack or packed lunch
Swimwear
