Coban Sewu & Goa Tetes Waterfall

An Adventure to the Hidden Waterfalls

General Information

Tumpak Sewu or Coban Sewu Waterfall is a new tourist destination located in the Sidomulyo Village, Pronojiwo, Lumajang. Even the locals didn’t know the existence of this waterfall until few years ago, an explorer found this outstanding waterfall and put an Indonesian flag high above the waterfall. Right now, Coban Sewu has become the talk and new destination for local tourists.

This place is called Coban Sewu from the words Coban means waterfall and Sewu means one thousand. A thousand waterfall because from one cliff there are a lot of waterfall flowing down and looks like “a thousand”.

If you walk through the river stream, you will also find another waterfall named Goa Tetes. This waterfall is formed like steps with many small waterfall and ponds. The upper part of this waterfall formed like cave and creates a natural stalagtite. Goa Tetes has gained popularity long before Coban Sewu found, therefore the track is easier to reach than Coban Sewu.

Both of the waterfall is maintained by local people. They maintain this new destination very well by preserving its cleanliness and being very friendly with every coming traveler.

Best Time to Visit

This waterfall has the same debit of water both in rainy and dry season. In rainy season, you have to be more carefull and watch out for landslide and flood. But the local guardian will warn you if its not safe to visit, so be worry-free.

Track and Destinations

To reach this waterfall, you can start from the Malang side or Lumajang side. If you start from the Malang side, you will reach the Coban Sewu waterfall first, then you can continue to Goa Tetes. And the other way if you start from Lumajang side.

If you start from Malang side, first you have to climb down a wooden-bamboo stairs. These stairs is 90° vertical and man-made by sticking bamboos to the hills. These stairs are quite long and far with few rest points. You have to be very careful on these stairs. Sometimes you have to queue up because people coming down and up at the same time, on this same small stairs. You will have the beautiful Coban Sewu view from above when you climb through.

Once you reach down, the Coban Sewu is close already and you can enjoy the fresh water. The whole area is always raining from the waterfall splash.

From Coban Sewu, you can continue to Goa Tetes through the rivers and hills. It will take you about 45 minutes. In Goa Tetes you have to climb up a random-natural steps through various ponds. From there, the way back is easier with cement-made stairs.

If you are afraid of heights, you can come through Goa Tetes first and comes back though the same route.

Temperature

Temperatures are refreshingly cool during the day but outright cold at night as temperatures can drop to zero in the dry season and are rarely much above 5°C in wet season. Daytime temperatures anywhere in the park never exceed 20°C with low teens being normal. So, you really want to bring your warm jacket here. Locals also rent jackets and hats, if you forgot yours.

It can rain at any time and the mean average rainfall of 6.6m is best measured in meters, not mm! Most of that comes in the wet season though – November to March.

Culinary

There are just few small stalls near the parking area. So prepare your snacks and mineral water before you start this trip.

This track has extreme routes and need a good physical condition
