GENERAL INFORMATION OF MADAKARIPURA WATERFALL

When you go to Bromo via Probolinggo, dont forget to stop by at this stunning Madakaripura Waterfall. This gorgeous 200m high waterfall is only 1 hour drive from Bromo. The location of this waterfall is at the end of a deep valley in the foothills of Tengger. A beautiful green scenery along the way becomes another entertainment.
The statue of Patih Gajah Mada will greet each visitor before they proceed further into the center of the waterfall. Madakaripura Waterfall is believed to be the resting place of Patih Gajah Mada, the legendary war general from Majapahit Kingdom who unites the whole archipelago becomes what is known as Indonesia today. On the main waterfall, you can see a cave, believed to be the meditation cave of Gajah Mada. Based on this belief, there are still many people who come to this waterfall to meditate or do spiritual rituals, particularly at the night of 1 Suro in Javanese New Year.

 

BEST TIME TO VISIT MADAKARIPURA WATERFALL

Madakaripura waterfall can be visited whole year. Its best to come during dry season between April-October. The waterfall never runs dry even in the dry season, and the colour of the water is greener during dry season. During the rainy season, there are chances its closed in the afternoon when it rains up in Bromo. When it rains in Bromo villages, the water comes down to the river and into Madakaripura Waterfall, so its closed due to the danger of flooding. Rain usually comes in the afternoon, so if you visit in the morning, you have better chances to visit.

 

TRACK TO MADAKARIPURA WATERFALL

First off, from the parking area, we will go with motorcycle through 2 km road. You just need to sit tight and enjoy the breeze, there are locals who drive the motorcycle. Once we reach the entrance, we will walk about 30 minutes through steel bridges and flat tracks. When we come closer, its time to put on your raincoat (or not!) and we will walk under the curtain of water that rained down from the cliffs. This wartern curtain are fresh spring water, some might enjoy drinking the water. Then we will walk through small river and climb up big stones to reach the main waterfall.

The main waterfall shapes like a well, with a deep pool underneath. You can dip into the pool and enjoy the fresh water. The main waterfall comes from above river, so its clear during dry season and brown during rainy season.

 

TEMPERATURE IN MADAKARIPURA WATERFALL

The water is refreshingly cool around 10-15 degree Celcius. The weather is cool but not as cold as up in Bromo.

 

CULINARY AROUND MADAKARIPURA WATERFALL

A lot of small stalls called “warung” around of this waterfall area. They are selling instant noodles, fried snacks, hot drinks, and many others.

 

WHAT TO BRING TO MADAKARIPURA WATERFALL

Positive attitude all the time
Use short pants and slipper. Your feet will get wet
Bring raincoat or swim suit. There are locals selling cheap plastic raincoat at the entrance
Toilet or changing room provided in the entrance. Bring towel if you’d like to swim.
Waterproof protection for your gadgets
Local guide will be provided by Tripperhood ( a must , though they dont really explain much)
Very humble toilets available for shower
